Già in passato vedendola nei film, mi ha sempre incuriosito la campana issata sulle locomotive USA, che, dai filmati di Youtube, vedo tuttora in uso, sia pure sostituita da una suoneria sui moderni locomotori diesel.
Se ho capito bene, viene suonata all'arrivo e durante la sosta nelle stazioni; qualcuno me lo può confermare e spiegare il motivo, visto che sui nostri mezzi (europei) non esiste?
Un'altra particolarità, che vedo nei filmati, delle ferrovie USA, è l'incrocio di binari ortogonali, cioè perpendicolari; anche di questo, non esiste l'equivalente da questa parte dell'Atlantico. |

Come non esiste da noi....c'era la linea dei bivi a Mestre che aveva questi incroci ortogonali...
PEr quanto riguarda l'uso della campana
It's the law in the USA/Canada that every locomotive must carry a bell as well as a whistle and/or horn.
The bell must be rung on the approach to a station, when stopping and when pulling out.
Rule 5.8.1
The Engine's bell must be sounded under any of the Following conditions
* Before moving, except when making momentary stop and start switching moves
* As a warning signal anytime it's necessary
* When approaching Men or Equipment on the or near the track
* When whistle signal (7, below) is required
* Approaching public crossings at grade with the engine in front and sounding of the whistle is prohibited (quiet zone), start signal at the crossing sign. If no sign, or if movement begins between crossing sign and the crossing, start signal soon enough before crossing to provide warning, continue ringing bell until the crossing is occupied.
Rule 5.8.2 (Sounding Whistle)
The Whistle may be used at anytime as a warning regardless of any whistle prohibition (quiet zone).
When other employees are working in the immediate area, sound the required whistle signal before moving.
Other forms of communication may be used in place of whistle signals except signals 1, 7, and 8. See following chart:
The required whistle signals are illustrated by "o" for short sounds or "--" for longer sounds
(1) Succession of Short Sounds
Use when persons or livestock are on the track at other than road crossings at grade. In addition, use to warn railroad employees when an emergency exsists, such as a derailment. When Crews on other trains hear this signal, they must stop until it's safe to proceed.

When stopped: air brakes are applied, pressure equalized

Release brakes, proceed.
(4) oo
Acknowledge of any signal otherwise not provided for
(5) ooo
When stopped: back up, acknowledgement of hand signal to back up
(6) oooo
Request for signal to be given or repeated if not understood

Approaching public crossings at grade with the engine in front, start signal at least 15 seconds but not more than 20 seconds before the crossing. If Movement exceeds 59 MPH, start signal at the corssing sign or not more than 1/4 mile before the crossing is no sign. Prolong or repeat signal until engine occupies the crossing.

Approaching men or equipment on or near the track, regardless of any whistle prohibitions (quiet zones)
After this initial warnings, sound whistle signal (4) intermittently until the head end of the train has passed the men or equipment. |

ora è tutto chiarissimo! Grazie.
Certo, fa specie pensare che da quelle parti esistano "zone del silenzio" (quiet zone) da cui sono banditi anche i fischi dei treni! |
